Type: cover

Country: USA

Date of use:

Unused postcard (viewcard, back of) issued to commemorate one of most dramatic events of World War II – raising American national flag at the Mount of Suribachi on the island Iwo Jima. The design of the sculpture (made by Felix Weihs de Weldon) is based on a photograph by Associated Press photojournalist JOE ROSENTHAL (1911 - 2006) "Raising the US flag, at the Mount Suribachi" taken on 23 February 1945. Joe Rosental was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for this iconic photograph in 1945. Dedicated on the 10th of November 1954 it is largest sculpture ever cast in bronze. The US Marine Corps War Memorial stands at the Arlington National Cemetery [ANC] in Arlington (Virginia, USA).
