Souvenir sheet of 4 stamps, issued to commemorate the 60th anniversary of death of ALBERT EINSTEIN (1879 – 1955), German-born American theoretical physicist. The design of the bottom left stamp (side-turned image) was a graphic representation based on a photographic portrait taken in 1948 by Canadian portrait photographer YOUSUF KARSH (1908 – 2002).
The upper left stamp show the physicist in similar manner, based on a photographic portrait taken in 1947 by Philippe HALSMAN (1906 – 1979), American portrait photographer.
The photographer was one, who had escaped Nazi Germany with Einstein’s help. Meeting together, Halsman held a camera while he chatted with Einstein. He asked the scientist if he believed there could ever be a lasting peace.
Einstein answered with weary resignation,
“No, as long as there will be man, there will be war.”
At that moment Halsman clicked his shutter and captured Einstein’s sadly knowing eyes for what became a famous portrait.
