Type: cover

Country: USA

Date of use: 3 October 1895

Business stationery (cover) used by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [M.I.T.] in Boston (Massachusetts, USA). The world-renowned school was donated by George Eastman with over $ 22 million in cash in a period of 8 years (1912 – 1920), on the condition that his donations remain anonymous. To help protect Eastman’s privacy, Richard Cockburn Maclaurin, then the head of M.I.T., invented the name “Mr. Smith” as the name of anonymous donor.
