Type: cover

Country: USA

Date of use: 16 August 1887

Business stationery (cover) used by the company ROBERT MUNNIE in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), formerly branch of the New York Calcium Light Co. The cachet shows equipment for generating “limelight” (aka Drummond Light or calcium light). This kind of light is obtained by heating quicklime (calcium oxide) in an oxyhydrogen flame. It was used since 1820s as stage lighting in theatres and music halls, and later in photography as a light source for magic lanterns and enlargers, especially for large format prints.
