Item no. P247 (cover)

Type: first day cover

Country: Great Britain

Date of issue: 12 January 1999

Cover (kind of decorated FDC) issued to honor WILLIAM HENRY FOX TALBOT, inventor of true photographic negative/positive process. The stamp shows some of the first photographic images of leaves and flowers, that Talbot obtained by putting them on a light-sensitive paper and exposing to sunlight. The cancel and the cachets show the cameras he used for this purpose ('mouse traps' as called them his wife).
