Business stationery (cover) used by the photographic studio W. G. MANDEVILLE, Jr. in Lowville (New York, USA). William Garrett Mandeville (1865 – 1947) was a photographer in Norwich and Lowville. His education in photography began when he started working as an assistant at Alston E. Hotchkiss’ studio in Norwich (1880). Three years later he got a job offer from another photographer – George W. Carter in Lowville, where he mastered making Carte de Visite and Cabinet photos as well, as larger formats. In 1887 he bought a studio from Frank Slocum and became independent. Apart typical portrait activity, he used to document daily life in Lowville and surroundings – photographing holidays, parades, disasters, annual events and scenic views. The images were published in form of postcards and also in larger sizes.
His biography (and five other photographers) was presented in a book by Robert Bogdan “EXPOSING THE WILDERNESS – Early-Twentieth-Century Adirondack Postcard Photographers” (Syracuse University Press 1999).
