Type: cover

Country: Dahomey (Afrique Occidentale Francaise)

Date of use: 11 December 1959

Business stationery (cover) used by the company STUDIO LUMIÈRE in Porto-Novo (Dahomey). The studio was owned by DOSSA Z. COSME, photographer who, in the years 1950 – 1976, often travelled to remote villages to photograph people in transition between traditional life and a more progressive world. His subjects included ju-ju men and voodoo priests and priestesses, but also the elderly for whom photography was likely to play a role not just in life but also in the afterlife. It was a commonly held belief in Benin that a person’s soul lives on after death, trapped within the photograph. The succession after him included 15000 negatives and 600 positives.
