FDCover with stamp issued to honor centenary of birth of MICHAEL STRANK (1919 – 1945), American soldier of Slovakian descent, one of the six marines raising American flag at the Mount of Suribachi during battle of Iwo Jima. The event took place in 23rd of March 1945 and was photographed by Associated Press photojournalist JOE ROSENTHAL (1911 - 2006). Sergeant M. Strank was killed in action a week later. Joe Rosenthal was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for this iconic photograph in 1945.
