Item no. S563 (stamp)

Type: stamp

Country: Monaco

Date of issue: 26 April 1969

Catalog number: Michel no. 928

Stamp issued to honor Napoleon’s 200th birthday. It presents reproduction of a painting by PAUL DELAROCHE (1797 – 1856), French painter, who is often quoted as saying “From today, painting is dead”. The observation was probably made in 1839, when he saw examples of daguerreotypes, the first successful photographic technique.
