Item no. P1534a (postcard)

Type: cover

Country: Great Britain

Date of use: August 1896

Business stationery (postcard, front of) used by the company R. [Richard] REYNOLDS & F. [Fredrick] W. BRANSON, Ltd., of Leeds (Great Britain), manufacturers of optical instruments like microscopes, cameras, lenses, binoculars, magic lanterns etc., also pharmaceuticals and photographic chemicals. Among known R & B cameras were e.g. “Phoenix”(1893), “Krystos” (ca. 1900), “Long Focus Camera”(ca. 1880).
The postcard was addressed to Scovill & Adams Co. in New York (USA), manufacturer of photographic supplies and cameras, and publisher of a weekly journal PHOTOGRAPHIC TIMES and AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER. The postage stamp on the postcard is a “perfin” – i. e. stamp bearing small round holes punched to form pattern of letters or marks characteristic for the firm’s name. In this case the holes create the pattern “R & B” being an acronym of the company’s owners’ names.
